CraneWerks Improves Safety and Efficiency for Semi-Trailer Manufacturer

Case Study

When a semi-trailer manufacturer decided to expand their operations and improve their manufacturing process, they contacted one of our dealers who turned to CraneWerks for a turnkey solution. We have all worked together for decades on various projects and when the manufacturer decided to act on improving their process, it made sense to partner again. They needed a complete door cell manufacturing area to improve both safety and production numbers. With their long-standing relationship with us in place, they decided to have CraneWerks provide the full scope of the project rather than working with multiple suppliers.

Application

Semi-Trailer Manufacturer needed a complete door cell manufacturing area to improve both safety and production numbers.

Process

The manufacturer had been duplicating their existing manufacturing process to expand operations and incorporate improvements internally. CraneWerks stepped in and provided project management services so that they were able to return focus to their core business.

CraneWerks was able to devote a 100’ x 20’ area in the shop to set up an exact replica of what would be installed in their facility. This allowed our customer to bring their engineering, production, maintenance, and safety teams to operate and test the system firsthand before installing it in their facility. In addition to making changes according to operator preferences, it also allowed us to install the production cell onsite in less time due to all processes having been tested ahead of time.

Challenges

Create a one-of-a-kind turnkey solution designed to expand the manufacturing process.

CraneWerks took on the challenge, working closely with the manufacturer to design and install the perfect solution. The team used their expertise in material handling equipment to create a system that was both efficient and safe. The door cell manufacturing area included a custom-designed monorail system with vacuum lifter and a variety of other equipment, all designed to streamline the manufacturing process and reduce the risk of accidents. Transfer carts, custom conveyors, lift tables, all the way down to the trash cans were included in this project. All custom equipment was designed and built in-house.

Results

In a short amount of time onsite, CraneWerks was able to turn an open space in their facility into a complete production area with a turnkey solution.

Thanks to CraneWerks’ innovative solution, the semi-trailer manufacturer is able to work towards improving both safety and production numbers through this area compared to the previous manufacturing process. The goal of the new system is to increase capacity, allowing the manufacturer to produce more door cells to meet the higher demands of their customers. This is anticipated to not only increase their revenue but also improve their overall competitiveness in the market.

In addition to the tangible benefits, the manufacturer was also pleased with the level of service they received from CraneWerks and have decided to order two more. It was said that because the CraneWerks team was professional, knowledgeable, easy to work with, completed the project on time and within budget, and exceeded the manufacturer’s expectations, they have recommended us for future projects. CraneWerks is now designing and producing the two additional production cells.

Overall, the project was a great success, thanks to the collaboration between the semi-trailer manufacturer, the dealer, and CraneWerks. By single-sourcing to CraneWerks, the manufacturer was able to both improve their manufacturing process and stay ahead of the competition is now back on task.
